Mitchell, 26, a former Utah jazzman, played 49 minutes and 48 seconds and was 15-19 in doubles, 7-15 in triples and 20-25 in free throws, with 11 assists and 8 rebounds.
The record belongs to the legendary Wilt Chamberlain who contributed 100 points as the Philadelphia Sixers defeated the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962. Mitchell honored the historic player and emulated a photo from that remembered night.
Mitchell became the seventh player to score 70 or more points in a game and the first for the Cavaliers with that feat in a regular season game.
The Bulls led by 21 points in the second quarter and as many as 18 in the third, but Cleveland rallied and Mitchell forced overtime with a double with three seconds left to tie the game at 130.
