Bad news for Facundo Campazzo: he won’t be able to play in the Euroleague with the Red Star

Facundo Campazzo, new reinforcement of the Red Star of Serbia, will not be able to play in the Euroleague at least until March for a double penalty imposed on the Serbian club.

Bad news for the Cordoba point guard who has remained out of the most important continental match to date on February 28.

The double penalty (economic and sporting) was imposed by the Euroleague Financial Panel, after finding Red Star guilty of Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations.

The economic sanction would not seem to be a problem for the Serbs: 25,000 euros; but sport is difficult: cannot sign up any players or coaches until at least February 28th. That is, Campazzo, out.

“The sanctions imposed take into account the seriousness of the offences, which included overdue debts with players from the current and previous seasons, as well as the provision of false or inaccurate information, which enabled the club to gain an undue competitive advantage and continue with its normal operations despite an irregularity,” reads a statement from the Euroleague.

“The Panel has also considered the recidivism, since the Serbian club has previously been sanctioned on two other occasions in recent years,” the letter continues.

Due to the sanction, communicated this Wednesday, Red Star will not be able to register new basketball players until March 1st, in view of the final stages of the Euroleague.

Bad news for Cordovan, who signed in recent days after his erratic time in the NBA over the past three seasons.

As reported by some Balkan media, Red Star will try appeal the fine at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS) to try to have all their reinforcements in the top continental competition at club level.

If the appeal fails, Campazzo could make his debut in the European Championship on Thursday March 2ndwhen the Serbs meet the German Bayern.

Then the Argentine could play another eight rounds of regular league: Anadolu Efes, Panathinaikos, Barcelona, Baskonia, Valencia, ASVEL, Olympiacos and Fenerbahce before playing the quarter-final Playoffs, if Red Star is in the top eight.
