Francis Cerundolothe rookie Pedro Cachin, Andrew Molteni Y Massimo Gonzalez will be the players to face Finland for the qualifiers of Davis Cup trying to make it back to the finals of the top team competition in tennis.
Guillermo Coria revealed this Friday the third squad list of his management to lead the team for the match that will be played on 4 and 5 February in the Espoo metro in that city on a fast surface and indoors.
The presence of Cachín (57th in the world rankings) is the big news in Argentina. If he plays, he will become the 87th player to defend Argentina’s jersey in the Davis Cup and the third to make his debut since Coria has been captain.
Upon receiving the news, he commented, “It’s a dream come true; I have waited and pursued this for many years. At one point I saw it very far and a lot of things happened last year that maybe I didn’t expect so quickly but they didn’t surprise me because I was looking for them a lot. And she added: “I am happy to be able to give my grain of sand, both in presence and if I have to play. I’ll try to get there as best I can by trying to fix the things I’m doing wrong and promoting the things I’m doing right.”
Bellvillense comes from an unforgettable 2022: they climbed almost 200 positions in the world rankings, reached the main draw at Roland Garros from qualifying and reached the third round of Flushing Meadows. In turn, he got four challengers and reached three other finals in this type of tournament.
“We have decided to call up Pedro Cachín because we believe the time has come for him to make his team debut. He has had a great 2022 with hard tours, he is top notch, with a lot of confidence and we see him prepared to tackle this series,” Coria explained.
Andrés Molteni (38th in the doubles ranking) is the other new addition to the squad. Who had his only performance in 2017 against Kazakhstan will return to replace Horacio Zeballos. In 2022 he won three titles, one of which with Máximo González on a surface similar to the one where the series will be played.
After his promising debut Francisco Cerúndolo (30th) will be present again. It comes from a fantastic year in which he won his first title (Bastad) and reached the semifinals in Miami, Rio de Janeiro and Hamburg.
Máximo González (45th in doubles) has established himself as one of the group leaders, and it will be his sixth consecutive season with the team and he has received the ninth call-up of his career.
“We have confidence in our team, we will face a very difficult team that feels very comfortable on the fast surface. The two singles are youngsters who had a strong 2022 as well as their most important doubles player who finished the year with strong performances. They are very powerful players who play very fast,” commented Coria referring to Emil Ruusuvuori and Otto Virtanen, who will definitely play singles, and doubles player Harri Heliovaara.
Diego Schwartzman, Sebastián Báez and Zeballos all resigned from the squad and Coria was unable to call on a fifth player. You will have until the match to make three substitutions, although if you call up a fifth player, this will count as a substitution.
