farewell letter

After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club football and international football.

I feel incredibly lucky to have fulfilled my dream of playing the sport I love. It gave me some of the best moments of my life. During the 17 seasons, I’ve had the best moments, which will be impossible to repeat, regardless of what the next chapter has in store for me.

From my first contact with Southampton to my last LAFC, and everything in between, he has shaped a career at the club for which I am immensely proud and grateful. Playing and captaining my national team 111 times has been a dream come true.

Showing my gratitude to all who have participated in this journey seems impossible to me. I am indebted to so many people for helping me change my life and shape my career in ways I never could have dreamed of when I started out at age 9.

To my previous clubs, Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and finally LAFC. To all my former coaches and managers, behind the scenes staff, teammates, all the devoted fans, my agents, my incredible friends and family, the impact you have had is immeasurable.

My parents and sister, without your dedication in those early days, without such a solid foundation, I would not be writing this statement right now, so thank you for setting me on this path and for your unwavering support.

My wife and children and their love and support have kept me going. They have been by my side through all the ups and downs, keeping me grounded. You inspire me to be better and make them proud.

So I am looking forward to the next phase of my life. A time of change and transition, an opportunity for a new adventure…

Farewell to the Welsh people

My decision to retire from international football was by far the hardest of my career.

How do I describe what it means to me to be a part of this country and this team? How do I articulate the impact it has had on my life? How can I put into words what I felt every time I put on that Welsh shirt? My answer is that I couldn’t do any of these things justice, just with words. But I know that every single person involved in Welsh football feels the magic and is affected by it in such a powerful and unique way, so I know you feel the same way I do, without using words.

My journey on the international scene has not only changed my life, but also who I am. The good fortune of being Welsh and being selected to play for and captain Wales has given me something incomparable to anything I have ever experienced. I am humbled and humbled to have been able to be part of the history of this incredible country, to have felt the support and passion of the red wall and to have been together in unexpected and surprising places.

I shared a dressing room with boys who became brothers and the back staff who became family, played for the most amazing managers and felt the unfailing support and love of the world’s most devoted fans. Thank you to each of you for being on this journey with me.

So for now I’m walking away, but not from the team that lives in me and runs through my veins. After all, the dragon on my shirt is all I need.
