The influence of the former coach of Sarandi Arsenala team that keeps fond memories of you for getting 4 titles -South American Cup in 2007, Torneo Clausura and Argentina Super Cup in 2012 and Argentina Cup in 2013-to get the classification of ´The Tri´ at the fourth World Cup in its history was huge. In the first place he took care of directly obtaining a ticket and avoiding the always complicated repechages. On the other hand, he has formed a team with several young players with great potential -Piero Hincapié, Moisés Caicedo and Pervis Estupiñán, among others- which will surely be part of Ecuador’s future.

However, and despite all that has been built, the 60-year-old Rafael has decided to end his first experience in charge of a national team. The reason for his departure has to do with the fact that he didn’t believe he had the necessary guarantees and conditions to be able to plan for the future.

The Argentine coach has also changed his representative and will now work with Juan Cruz Oller, who has already approached him with club and country offers. Lettuce is resting for now after the experience in Qatar and will then decide how to continue his career.

The trajectory of Alfaro

In this way, Ecuador must go out on the market to look for a coach and try not to lower the bar of what it was Alfaro’s cycle, which started in September 2020 and with a total of 35 games -12 wins, 14 draws and 9 defeats-.

Gustavo Alfaro’s career began in the early 90s managing Atlético Rafaela and, from there, he has worked in Quilmes, Belgrano, Olimpo, San Lorenzo, Arsenal, Rosario Central, Al-Ahli, Tigre, Gimnasia, Huracán and Boca . To his credit he has: two promotions in the First Division -with Olimpo and Quilmes-, the aforementioned titles with Arsenal and a local championship in his time with Xeneize.

Surely the next few months will be one of reflection and introspection for the coach, who will have to decide whether to continue to be linked to the technical management or whether to opt for the withdrawal of the reserve benches.
