“You’re not on the National Team for silver, you’re for glory”, remembered Oscar Ruggeri what coach Carlos Salvador Bilardo told them at the memorable 1986 World Cup in Mexico. That glory is what the World Champions are currently enjoying, visiting Mendoza to showcase the wines of Los Héroes and La Final.

El Cabezón Ruggeri, Sergio Checho Batista, Ricardo Giusti, Héctor Negro Enrique, Jorge Burruchaga, Oscar Garré and Carlos Chino Tapia They were together for three days, an unforgettable reunion in Cuyo province.

Guests next to the winery Mendoza VineyardsThey toured the vineyards of Agrelo and the magnificent view of its mountains, ate barbecue and pizza, enjoyed wines, and just like whenever the team came together, they remembered every game and particular situation of the that glorious month in the land of the Aztecs.

It’s like a graduation trip. A group of rugged men. who now has gray hair, is 60 years old and never stops joking. The two of them lived in rooms, like when they were concentrating. Checho Batista was left alone, as the number of those summoned was strange.

They went down to a group in the hotel lobby and sat in a circle. There was laughter and they seemed to understand each other in their glances as when they exchanged gestures in Narigón’s endless tactical conversation, which they called Bilardo. “Up to two hours he preceded us and delayed playing with the VCR”Batista recalled.

The ’86 Champions now have their own line of wines. The glorious soccer team that won the World Cup in Mexico has just launched two labels that summarize the spirit of the team.

With grapes from Agrelo, winemaker Denis Vicino of Mendoza Vineyards is the creator of the wines they call: La Final Malbec and Héroes Blend. These wines also represent those who cannot travel to Mendoza, such as Neri Pumpido either Jorge Valdano. The percentage left to the champions for the proceeds will go to the families of all make up the champion team, with Diego Maradona at the helm.

“It’s from the whole team, the masseuses, the coaching staff, the families of those who are no longer here, and all of us who are in that world championship”Ruggeri’s clarification.

Garré took the baton and counted: “We are fortunate enough to know the glory of a great group of people. The idea is to have a fund that can be saved in case anyone needs it, but the economy is not that important to us. We are very happy that combine this Mendoza Vineyards project and we hope people buy wine “.

El Burru, author of the goal that crowned the 3-2 final against West Germany, stressed no one will share the money from the profit from the wine. “We want to stay together, help each other, we’re friends and it’s all for those who need it”he clarified.

“Billiards has instilled in us a lot of value and this is one of those. Glory cannot be bought and we already have it. We will not distribute it to ourselves, it is useful when someone is in need of economy “Burruchaga pointed out.

When the time came to showcase the wines, the champions stood side by side on a podium in the stately Hall of Mirrors, as if on an academic table. Ruggeri is the most histrionic and the born conductor of the press conference. But those who really know about wine and expert tasters are Burruchaga Y Giusti.

“The decision to choose this winery and go was a democratic thing. We drank Finca La Anita wine 20 years ago, when the label was yellow. We like the wines we reach for, hopefully like it of people “Giusti’s assurance.

The winery oenologist expands: “We define the style of wines based on the tastes of the team members”. And then came Batista’s confession: “I don’t like alcohol, but it’s really delicious. Congratulations to Denis, the winemaker ”.

The beginning of the Heroes wine was a conversation between Cabezón Ruggeri and his friend Jorge del Valle, commercial manager for Latin America of Mendoza Vineyards winery, which is part of the Origin Wines Group, and owns Finca La Anita, of Agrelo.

“We wanted to do something again and Anita gave me a try of wine, which I liked”Ruggeri recalled. They discussed the possibility of making wine for members of the selected champion at the Azteca stadium, which maintains permanent contact via a WhatsApp group.

Conversations began with those in charge of the winery, with its director Richard Bonvin, and with winemaker Vicino; a year later, the dream of owning wine is a reality.

“When we found out, we were excited and we had our first meeting in Buenos Aires with Giusti, Burruchaga, Pumpido and Ruggeri”said the champions.

After sending samples, the team decided on a Malbec and an icon: thus was born La Final Malbec and Héroes Blend, a blend of red grapes consisting of 50% Cabernet Franc, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. They come from a farm owned by the Origin Group in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo.

“The names of the wines emerged from the ideas we were throwing at the group’s Whastapp. And in the photo of the final we were all hugging, singing an anthem”Said Ruggieri. In Heroes, the other wine, Diego Maradona’s fictional hands appear to be raising the World Cup.
