It only took 4 minutes for El Pistolero to score his first goal in the tricolor shirt: he took advantage of a good qualification and defined with finesse, from the right, above the opposing goalkeeper. It was 1-0 and the signature cry, with a dedication to his children.

Shortly after, at minute 30, Lucho scored on the board again. He was holding hands and defined as those in the know, together with a stick. Thus he scored the 3-1 run against Sao Luiz, who had reached a draw after a pure goal start between one goal and another.

Good things come in threes for Lucho, who already knows he’ll bring home the ball. It is that at the age of 37 he took advantage of a flying rebound and nailed a volley to seal the 4-1 run of his, who are heading towards the Olympic return.

After the authorization of the CBF so that he could play, the Tricolor have called up the 35-year-old striker for the match that defines Porto Alegre’s state as champion of champions. The Uruguayan star was confirmed in the call-up by team coach Renato Gaúcho as he continues with preparatory training for the resumption of Brasileirao.

“Suárez is training, he is adapting to our work. But the torcedor will be able to see him up close, who will play tomorrow. How many minutes will it be? The player decides…”, DT had spoken of the presence of the experienced striker in the definition of the Gaúcha Cup Winners’ Cup this Tuesday.

Lucho hadn’t played official minutes since Uruguay’s elimination at the World Cup in Qatar on 2 December. In that match against Ghana, Suárez started and gave an assist, although he was substituted in the 21st minute of the second half. One of the strongest images of that day was that of the former Barcelona player crying on the substitutes’ bench after being excluded from the tournament.

After the World Cup, Suárez left Nacional and was heralded by Gremio, where he was presented at the Arena in front of an impressive 33,000 fans. “I promise to play my football, give my all, look for titles so that the Gremio goes back to where it should be”, Pistolero himself said once he wore the Porto Alegre team shirt.

In case of being champion in the Gaúcha Cup Winners’ Cup, Suárez would go on to achieve no less than his 22nd career title. Regardless of the importance or otherwise of this tournament, for him it could be a revenge after what represented the clamorous elimination of the Uruguayan team at the World Cup in Qatar.
