The oppressive heat of the last few weeks, and which still hasn’t subsided, has been a determining factor. However, between the departure at 7.30 and a light breeze coming from the river a few meters away, the weather for Vicente López’s 10k on the morning of this Sunday 12 was a little more favourable. At least, it has allowed elite athletes – with a notable Florencia Borelli and Olympian Eulalio Muñoz at the forefront of the men – as well as more than a thousand enthusiastic fans could you take the test?with the support of local firefighters, extensive medical and hydration equipment.
Taking these weather conditions into account, Florencia Borelli’s performance was directly spectacular and her time of 32 minutes and 48 seconds was, inclusively, close to his own national record which since last season he shares with Daiana Ocampo (32:29). The women’s podium was completed by Antonella Guerrero (36:33) and Fernanda Oropel (36:58).
After last season’s international campaign, his titles and his records, Borelli is the great figure of Argentine athletics. From Mar del Plata, at 30, he is now facing his preparation for his biggest dream: the Olympic Games in Paris.
“I couldn’t miss it, this was my last road or street race for the moment as the track season is coming up. I will participate in local tournaments and then I will do three months of training and competitions in Spain, with the aim of reaching a test on the track at the Budapest World Championships in August. I also have the Pan American Games in Chile and next year the marathon,” she said. And although his performance at the Vicente López circuit was superb, he said that “despite the heat, I felt strong. And it gives me a lot of confidence for what’s coming.”
Eulalio Muñoz of Chubut, the Argentine representative in the marathon of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and at the Eugene 2022 World Championships, took the lead among the men and in one of his best performances in recent times he surpassed the men’s classification with 30:15.
Middle-distance runners Fabián Manrique (30:22) and Diego Lacamoire (30:28) were his companions, and then Pablo Toledo from Santiago (30:36), Alexis Corrías from Rio Negro (30:44) and the local Nahuel Di Leva ( 30:59), all under 31 minutes, which – under this climate – reveal the high level of the test.
“It was very difficult for everyone, but I’m very happy to have participated and won. Now I prepare my participation in the Pampa Traviesa Marathon,” said Muñoz. In the end Federico Bruno was unable to participate, while Ignacio Erario of Mendoza, another favorite, had to leave after the 4th kilometer due to physical illness.
In other categories, the winners were Norma Ramos (51:13) in the women’s wheelchair, Víctor Prestes (52:49) in the B-1 blind, Angeles Báez (69:31) in the B-2/3 blind and Marcelo Sarmiento (49:45) in the same men’s category.
It took off with a temperature of 27°C, which increased slightly during the test. The organization has decided to increase the usual supply of hydration stations, also in the starting area, and in the previous days the weather forecasts were sent to all the participants (shorter warm-up, avoid exposure to the sun, adapt the race under environmental conditions, hydrate at all times, use a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen). The support provided by the firefighters was very important for all the runners, who helped to drain the water on the circuit and wetting the athletes who passed by, and there was a large number of doctors equipped with the best technologies, including eleven automatic defibrillators .
The family atmosphere, the presence of the racing teams and also the “squad” made up of members of the Horse Grenadier Regiment, among others, have contributed to making this event a real sporting event.
The 10km of Vicente López was able to take place again after the long break due to the pandemic -the previous edition was in 2019- and brought together several elite athletes from our country. Presented by the City of Vicente López, it was also sponsored by Jacana (official clothing of the Argentine Athletics Confederation) and the participation of Acuve, Clarín, Eco-Gatorade, Emergencias, FotoRun, Granix, Instituto Asegurador Mercantil, Kynet and Tropical.
The test was supervised by the Argentine Athletics Confederation on an official circuit, measured and certified by World Athletics, in whose calendar it was included, assigning points for the world ranking of Elite athletes. This 10km by Vicente López marked the beginning of the Ñandú Association’s 2023 calendar, which will include the most popular competitions in the region (the 21km Buenos Aires/Argentine Half Marathon Championship on August 27 and the Buenos Aires International Marathon on September 24 ). , plus the San Isidro 10k/National Road Championships on November 5th.
