The list of players called up for the Argentina Under 17 national team has been released. Diego Placente, the youth coach, presented the list of 23 players who will have the mission of representing Albiceleste in the Copa Sudamericana. Logically, and while they are taking their first steps, the surnames of the players are unknown. However, the case of Lorenzo Luchino, goalkeeper of Sevilla B, is very particular.
The 17-year-old goalkeeper is the only one in the squad who works for a foreign club. While it is increasingly common for Argentinian (or Argentinian-born) players to play for European clubs, what is not so common is that they are called up to smaller youth divisions.
Lorenzo Luchino, category 2006, was born in Córdoba, more precisely in Rio Cuarto, and has been living in Europe with his family for some years. His first steps were the Estudiantes de Río Cuarto, but for work reasons the parents have decided to go to work abroad.
The place chosen to live and face a new life was Spain and, with the transfer in those directions, Luchino’s training under the three sticks continued there. Firstly, CD Puerto Malagueño was his first club, although from mid-2022 he made the leap to Sevilla B.
His call-ups to the youth team – he had already been called up in February to train and play in some friendlies- are due the scouting network that is carried out by Bernardo Romeo and the various technicians responsible for the training categories. In particular turned down the opportunity to be called up for the Spanish national team.
When it comes to delving into his style and characteristics under the three sticks, his large size can be highlighted. At 17 he already measures 1.90, this allows him to have an excellent passing game and a great command of the area. Furthermore, he has a good footwork, which is very important in the game he is playing these days.
As if that weren’t enough, he has already had frictions with the Sevilla first team. Since he took part in some training during Jorge Sampaoli’s cycle, who today walks the razor’s edge and many see him already outside the institute.
Their next challenge will be South America Sub 17, where Argentina will be part of Group B and take on Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Venezuela for a ticket to the final round. He will undoubtedly be a project to follow and his performance must be taken into account, both with the Albiceleste shirt and in Sevilla B, for the future.
Benjamin Garré, the antecedent
The 22-year-old striker, nephew of Oscar Garré, world champion with the Argentine national team in 1986, is the last antecedent of an Argentine player who participated in a South American Sub 17 playing for a European club.
He was in the youth tournament that took place in Chile, in 2017. At that time, the current Russian Krylia player Sovetov Samara had emigrated to Manchester City from Vélez Sarsfield. His departure from the Liniers club was controversial, as Fortín did not receive any financial compensation because he used parental authority.
That selection, directed by Miguel Ángel Micó, did not have the best results. Went out of group stage, product of 3 losses and 1 win. Garré played in all 4 games and scored no goals.
