Jorge Sampaoli has ceased to be the coach of Sevilla, after a weak season that left the Andalusian club battling for relegation. Today he was just two points off the hottest spots in the standings.
“Sevilla FC has terminated the contract with its manager, Jorge Sampaoli, after the team’s defeat in Getafe, which once again brought the team to the brink of relegation,” read a club statement.
Last weekend, those led by the Argentine fell 2-0 in Getafe for the 26th round of the league, in what was their third defeat in their last four Spanish league matches. This hastened the club’s decision.
“The fact that the team hasn’t managed to get out of the bottom positions of the table since he took over as manager and the image offered in the team’s last few games led the club to make this decision.” Sevilla explained in a tough statement.
The club specifies that the objective of its decision is to seek “a reaction in the last twelve days that are missing to finish the championship” and that work is already underway to close “the hiring of a new coach”.
According to the Spanish pressthe chosen one would be coach José Luis Mendilibarwho was the coach of teams such as Eibar, Osasuna or Athletic Bilbao.
Sampaoli, who had a contract until 2024, had arrived last October to replace Julen Lopetegui, starting a second spell at the helm of the nervosa club.
His first step had been just under a year, between July 2016 and May 2017, when he left the team to coach the Argentina national team, replacing then coach Edgardo Bauza. Despite qualifying, the team never found their way back and fell in the round of 16 of the 2018 Russia World Cup to France.
Sampaoli landed in Seville with the mission of getting a team off the ground, which at the time of his arrival I had only gotten 5 points out of a possible 21 in the league, weighed down by injuries and the summer departure of key players such as defenders Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos.
But five months laters starts without being able to repeat the good results of the previous stage when he left the Andalusian team in fourth place in the league and fell in the last 16 of the Champions League with Leicester.
Sampaoli is leaving the club after managing the team in 19 league games, of which they have won only six, they have drawn five and lost eight, leaving the team 14th in the league, just two points behind Valencia, who sit in the relegation zone in the Second Division.
In Europe, Sevilla progressed from the Champions League to the Europa League, where the Argentine managed to take the team to the quarter-finals, but now faces a complicated Manchester United, who has already left behind Barcelona and Betis.
Copa América winner as Chile coach in 2015 and former coach of Olympique de Marseille, Santos or Universidad de Chile, Sampaoli spent Monday waiting for a decision from the Sevilla club after Sunday’s heavy defeat, according to local press reports.
According to Spanish newspapers, negotiations over his fee would delay the announcement until this Tuesday.
