Juan Roman Riquelme and Martin Palermo they will share a playing field again this afternoon, when they attend the game with which they villareal, the Spanish club where both played twenty years ago, will celebrate its centenary. Among those present will be Palermo and Riquelme, two of the most emblematic footballers who have represented the Valencian Community club, even if they did not coincide in a team. The striker arrived in January 2001, shortly after the Intercontinental Cup final in which Boca beat Real Madrid in Tokyo. He played 77 games, scored 18 goals and moved to Betis in August 2003. When Palermo left, Riquelme arrived, on loan from Barcelona. In four years, the player played 142 matches and scored 45 goals.
The last time Riquelme and Palermo stepped on the grass of a soccer field together was on July 9, 2015. when they attended Sebastián Battaglia’s farewell party at La Bombonera. That day they shared the blue team, led by Carlos Bianchi, who beat Amarillo 6-4 with two goals from Román and one from Titán.
In addition to the two former Boca players, five other Argentines with an exceptional past at Villarreal will give their present at the Estadio de la Cerámica: they will be Juan Pablo Sorín, Gonzalo Rodríguez, Fabricio Coloccini, Mateo Musacchio and Mariano Barbosa. All of them will form the club’s legends squad, which will be led by Benito Floro and which will also include the Uruguayan Diego Forlanthe Frenchman Robert Pires and the Brazilian Marcos Senna, among others.
The Villarreal legends will face a team made up of former footballers who have worn the shirt of the Spanish team. Led by José Antonio Camacho, among others, Salva Ballesta, Jose Emilio Amavisca, David Albelda, Ferran Giner, Fernando Morientes, Iván Campo and Quique Setién (current coach of Villarreal) will take the field.
