Second victory in two days, 10 goals scored and none conceded: the new Portugal of Roberto Martínez walk with decisive step towards Euro-2024, after winning 6-0 in the away match in Luxembourg this Sunday, with a new brace from Cristiano Ronaldo.
After the two goals scored in the victory against Liechtenstein last Thursday, Ronaldo scored two more in Luxembourg (9 and 31). Joao Felix (15), Bernardo Silva (18), Otavio (7) and Rafael Leao (88) completed the victory.
Despite his rival’s weakness, new Portugal coach Roberto Martínez made no changes in attack from the squad that beat Liechtenstein 4-0 on Thursday, with Bruno Fernandes and Joao Palhinha in midfield, Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva pairing and Cristiano Ronaldo as the most advanced man.
And the Spanish coach’s bet proved to be positive again, sin the Seleção settled the ballot in just half an hour.
The Portuguese captain showed that despite his 38 years he hasn’t lost his nose for goal and opened the scoring in the 9th minute: Bruno Fernandes’ cross from the right, Nuno Mendes headed the far post in the heart of the small area and Ronaldo pushed ball to net.
With very little reaction time, Luxemburgo was doubled by Joao Felix’s header from Bernardo Silva’s cross (15′). The Manchester City midfielder scored the third, also with a header from Palhinha’s center (18′).
And CR7, in his 198th match for the national team, closed the first half by winning with another signature action: a deep pass from Bruno Fernandes and in one-on-one Ronaldo beat the local goalkeeper Anthony Moris with a ball that hit the post (31 ).
With the double against Luxembourg, Cristiano Ronaldo has reached 122 goals for the national team, where he is the top scorer in his history, and 833 in his entire career (1,157 games). In this way the Portuguese moves away in his career with Lionel Messi who, after scoring against Panama, reached his 800th goal.
CR7 made way for Gonçalo Ramos when the game had already waned in intensity and Martínez tried to revive his side with some changes.
And the coach was right once again, given that the fifth goal featured two players who had just entered the field, when Otavio headed in a cross from Rafael Leao to complete the hand (77′).
The Milan winger could also have increased the difference, but Moris saved a penalty from Leao (85), who a few seconds later still had a clear chance, but a defender shot on the line (86).
In the end, Leao finds a reward for his persistence and beats Moris with a cross after a good personal action (88).
In this group J, Portugal leads with a total of 6 points, followed by Slovakia with 4 after winning 2-0 against Bosnia, who remain with three points, tied with Iceland, who beat Liechtenstein 7-0.
