Emblem player of the London club from 2001 to 2014 and manager from July 2019 to January 2021, Lampard will try to qualify the club, currently 11th in the Premier Leagueto a European Cup, while the management continues its “meticulous and exhaustive process to find a permanent manager”, explains the statement.

The new American owners, who bought the club from Roman Abramovich at the end of last season, sacked Thomas Tuchel last August, after just seven games this season, to be replaced by Graham Potter, both promising and inexperienced at the top level.

Unable to make an impact in a changed group, after €600m spent on transfers between summer and winter, often by promising young players, he was sacked on Sunday, leaving the club in 11th place in the league, despite still being in race for the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, co-owners of the club, have chosen to buy time with this historical figure of the club, which could at least reassure the fans, never convinced by either Potter or the club’s recent management.

“We are delighted to welcome back Frank to Stamford Bridge (…), a legend at this club,” explained the two men, quoted in the statement.

“As we continue the meticulous and exhaustive process of finding a permanent head coach, we are giving the club and the fans a clear and stable blueprint for the rest of the season,” they said.

“We want to give ourselves every chance to win and Frank has all the characteristics and qualities needed to take us to the finish line,” they said.

Lampard, however, still has a lot to prove as a manager.

After a bittersweet experience at Chelsea, which led to Champions League qualification despite a suspension and the FA Cup final, his second season was much more difficult, and he was sacked in January.

Then he was reborn at Everton, where he had been called up at the end of January 2022, saving him from relegation. But his 44 games in charge of the Toffees, in which he recorded 24 defeats and draws 8, for just 12 wins, did not leave a great impression on the Liverpool city club.
