Almirón, 51, whose last job was in Elche in Spain – where he didn’t get the desired results and his departure was brought forward in November last year – Riquelme has always liked him. Attracted by what was his job in Lanús, where he reached the final of the Copa Libertadores 2017 after eliminating River, the current Xeneize vice-president at the time tried to make Almirón the first DT of his cycle as leader, although in the end the position fell to Michele Angelo Russo.

As announced this Saturday, Boca and Almirón are working on the contractual details and on the assembly of the technical staff that the coach will have (part of his team has remained in Spain) and if there are no setbacks, his name could be made official in the previous match against Colón, which will see Mariano Herrón on the local bench.

With the decision made that the new DT does not come from the club’s kidney, as Ibarra and Sebastián Battaglia were, the long list of names that came out and which included Diego Martínez (currently in Tigre), Luis Zubeldía, José Pekerman and Diego Alonso , among others, Boca ended up deciding on Almirón.

If it materialises, it will be Almirón’s return to Argentine football after his second spell at Lanús, which ended in July 2022. His career as DT began at Dorados de Sinaloa in 2008 and in Argentina he managed Defense and Justice, Godoy Cruz , Independiente, Lanús and San Lorenzo.
