Auston Matthews scored his 60th goal of the season in the Toronto Maple Leafs ’3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
The Maple Leafs beat the Red Wings 3-0 on Tuesday.
Auston Matthews first scored his 59th goal in 15:48 (Spezza, Blackwell) of the second period to give his team a 1-0 lead.
He then hit the 60-goal mark in his 60th power play in the third period (Nylander, Rielly) in 5:49 to give the Maple Leafs a 3-0 lead.
His teammate John Tavarez had previously scored to double his mark, in 4:03 (Nylander, Lyubushkin).
Goaltender Jack Campbell got the shutout, stopping all 20 shots he faced.
Matthews among the favorites for Hart
Auston Matthews led the NHL in goals, Connor McDavid had the most points and Igor Shesterkin was the league’s top goaltender. They are favorites to win the Hart Trophy.
But the candidate pool also includes Johnny Gaudreau, Leon Draisaitl, Jonathan Huberdeau and Roman Josi, among others.
I think this is probably the hardest race for Hart to predict in years, explains former NHL player and coach Rick Tocchet. I could argue for a lot of men.
Ballots are set for Monday night. Five players can register for the ballot.
