Argentine tennis player Francisco Cerúndolo will face Norwegian Casper Ruud today for the round of 16 of the ATP 500 in Barcelona, which will award the Conde de Godó trophy.
Cerúndolo, 32nd classified in the ATP world rankings, entered the Catalan tournament yesterday with a comfortable victory over the Italian Francesco Pessaro (130) 6-2, 6-2, and will play again not before 12.30 (Argentina time) against Ruud (3).
As for the background, the 24-year-old Argentine beat Ruud last year at the Swedish ATP Bastad, and lost at the Masters 1000 in Miami, also in 2022.
The winner of the cross between Cerúndolo and Ruud will play this Friday in the quarterfinals against the Briton Daniel Evans (26) or the Russian Karen Khachanov (11).
The match, which is played on the Real Club de Tenis de Barcelona’s brick-dust court, will award prizes totaling 2,872,435 euros and has the reigning champion, Carlos Alcaraz (2) as the favourite.
The 19-year-old Alcaraz from Murcia and champion this year at the Argentina Open and the Indian Wells Masters 1000, will play his eighth-final against his compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut (25) not before 11:00.
Throughout its history, the comte de Godó has had two Argentine champions: Martín Jaite in 1987 and Gastón Gaudio in 2002.
