In the group stage, as in the Seniors World Cup, teams from the same confederation will not be able to face each other, so in pot 2 (England, South Korea, New Zealand, Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia) there could be a crossover with only three rivals.

Furthermore, in Pot 3 (Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Japan, Iraq, Honduras and Fiji) luck will be on the side of Javier Mascherano’s team if they manage to avoid Nigeria and Japan.

Finally, pot 4 will be integrated, in principle, by lower-level rivals: Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Gambia, Israel, Slovakia and Tunisia.

Just there will be Israel, selected to which Indonesia did not want to receive and as a result lost the organization of the tournament.

The 24 national teams will be split into six groups of four, of which 16 will advance to the knockout stage.

What did they say about the World Cup?

The first to speak on the draw was the president of the Argentine Football Federation (AFA), Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia, who wrote on his Twitter account: “On Friday we will be in Zurich to watch the draw for the Under-20 World Cup, to play in our country”.

“The greatest promises of world football will compete in the land of world champions. We are working to make the event something historic. The joy is total,” said Tapia.

For his part, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, Matías Lammens, commented: “The anticipation is great from every point of view. It is the most important event for Argentina in a long time and it is the most important tournament for FIFA after the Seniors World Cup”.

“It will have a significant impact on tourists. We will finish designating the venues these days and we will place the teams from Uruguay and Brazil in places that make it easier for their fans to arrive. We are also planning special flights with Aerolíneas Argentinas so that arrive easily. The same will be true for Colombia,” he warned in a dialogue with online radio Futurock.

San Juan, Mendoza, Santiago del Estero and La Plata will be the venues where the contest will take place, which will have its opening match on May 20 at the Madre de Ciudades in Santiago.

“Israel could be another national team that attracts people because it is one of their few participations. It seems to me that Claudio Tapia’s movement was rapid and the same for us with Sergio Massa. Furthermore, the World Cup will be played internally for the most and will displace tourism,” Lammens explained.

The minister said ‘Chiqui’ Tapia likes “a lot to be a sports manager” ahead of a consultation on a possible candidacy in the next elections.

Argentina out of the window but favourites

The World Cup will have 24 participants and Argentina, which did not qualify sportingly, will be one of the candidates, according to the history of the Under 20 edition, in which it won six titles and had its splendor between the last decade of last century and the first of the new millennium.

Is that Argentina won its first edition in Japan in 1979, led by a young Diego Armando Maradona and goals from Ramón Díaz, and then waited until Qatar 1995 with the cycle of José Néstor Pekerman on the bench.

From that moment Argentina became a powerhouse in the category, continuing with the two-time world championship in Malaysia in 1997, one of the best teams with Juan Román Riquelme and Pablo Aimar, among others, and after a bad tournament in Nigeria in 1999 was surpassed in 2001 when it was hosted.

In that championship, Argentina beat Leandro ‘Pipi’ Romagnoli as leader of football and Javier Saviola as top scorer.

Little time passed to add two new stars, one of them with Lionel Messi, remembered at the 2005 World Cup in the Netherlands for starting the journey with a 1-0 defeat against the United States as the star followed the match from the substitutes’ bench .

This would have earned coach Francisco Ferraro, who took over after Pekerman moved up to the majors, a challenge from the late Julio Humberto Grondona and from there Messi was a regular and figure in the tournament, finishing as MVP, goalscorer and champion, with two goals in the final against Nigeria.

Just two years later, with the litter of Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero and several Racing footballers such as Sergio ‘Chiquito’ Romero, Gabriel Mercado and Maximiliano Moralez, and Ángel Di María, an Olympic round was repeated in Canada and from there it is not never been close to a star more, so now, despite the sporting presence in the South American, the opportunity is close by being local.
