Rome Masters 1000: Guido Pella was reborn from the 484th position in the standings and gave the surprise against Cressy, 41st in the ATP

Guido Pellecurrently ranked 484 in the ATP, he gave the surprise in the first round of the Rome Masters 1000 beat the American Maxime Cressi (41st) for 6-3 and 6-4, this Thursday in the Italian capital.

Pella, who turns 33 on May 17 and participates in Rome thanks to his family protected classification after a long absence due to injury, he will play the second round with the Spaniard Alexander Davidovich (34th).

The other Argentine tennis player who will play during the day is Diego Schwartzman (91), who will meet the Italian Matteo Arnaldi (99) not before 3.30pm.

In case of passing the initial round, the “Piccolo”‘s next rival will be another Italian, the nascent Lorenzo Musetti (19).

The other three Argentine tennis players who continue in the tournament which takes place at the Foro Itálico facilities, Francisco Cerúndolo, Sebastián Báez and Tomás Etcheverry, will play their second round matches tomorrow.

In the case of “Fran” Cerúndolo (31), excluded from the initial round, he will face the Chinese Yibing Wu (57), winner of the Frenchman Richard Gasquet (44) by 3-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

Báez (40), for his part, beat Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas (97) 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round, and will play his next match against Russian Alexander Shevchenko (93), who entered the main draw as “lucky loser” in place of Dutch Tallon Griekspoor (36), who was injured at the last moment.

Finally, La Plata’s Etcheverry (61) showed up in Rome with a 7-6 (9-7) and 6-3 victory over Frenchman Luca Van Assche (85), and this Friday he will face none other than Serbian Novak Djokovic.

The tournament, which is played in parallel between the ATP and WTA on clay, will distribute a prize pool of 8,637,966 euros and brings together Djokovic (1) and the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (2), since they had not met so far in 2023.
