It has been a day of celebration in Athens from the start. Players from Argentina’s Matías Almeyda’s squad were greeted on the pitch with flares and colored lights and euphoria took over the stands throughout the match.

One point was enough to tie the trophy and certify the superiority established by AEK in the last stretch of the season, when they became dominant, ousted Panathinaikos from the leadership and pushed Olympiacos out of the race, who went down with the Spanish Michel González left his bench weeks ago.

AEK held on at the top and with a clear win completed their success. It was the Swiss Steven Zubel who took advantage of a cross by the Iranian Ehesan Hajsafi to beat goalkeeper Avgerinos Panagiotis in the sixteenth minute and a quarter of an hour later the goal was doubled by the Serbian Mijat Gacinovic on a ball received by Zubel.

The victory was completed by the Mexican Orbelin Pineda who shortly before replaced the Serbian Mijat Gacinovic and sentenced the match to the hour of play. It was the ninth goal for the Mexican footballer who also has two assists in his numbers and who scored a block with Levi Garcia.

With five minutes to go, Poland’s Damian Szymanski sealed the final victory by scoring the fourth goal from a pass from Niclas Eliasson.

AEK Athens will be back in the Champions League, as will second-placed Panathinaikos, who didn’t go beyond a draw against Aris in their last match. Both AEK and Panathinaikos will have to play the Champions League qualifying phase before entering the group stage. Olympiacos, champions in the last three editions and who beat PAOK at home (0-1), finished third and will play in the Europa League.

PAOK and Aris, fourth and fifth respectively, go to the Conference League. Volos, sixth and last in the league group of the Greek competition, was left without a European place.
