FC Barcelona have won their first title in the post-Messi era, but the main focus for next season seems to be the return of the Argentine star. Xavi’s team won the city classic against Espanyol 4-2 and became champions again after three years.

“It was a championship that required a lot of effort from us. Being champions with four games to go means that we worked well,” said Joan Laporta, after the match and after winning the title.

“We saved the club financially and gave Barcelona joy again. And now we are starting to win important titles which we hope will be the beginning of a splendid stage,” added Laporta, who returned to the presidency in 2021 after a first internship from 2003 to 2010 .

The coach underlined the coach’s work: “Xavi has been instrumental. Beyond his football knowledge, he knows the club, its style. He has worked hard to be able to offer quality football. He deserves all the compliments.”

“We have a great manager, a great ‘staff’. We are already working on the squad for next season. We hope to be able to sign,” he said in light of the institution’s financial difficulties.

“We have drawn up an austerity plan to be able to respect the financial ‘fair play’ to be able to sign. We are working to be able to have an even more competitive team next season,” he concluded.

After the match, President Laporta joined the festivities at the Fuente de Canaletas where the crowd celebrated the title obtained. And, as the Barça boss handed streamer Jijantes a note, a unified cry began to be heard: “Messi, Messi…”

The question was ripe and Laporta was asked if the Argentine team captain could return to the club in June: “Work has been going on for some time for next season”, the president began.

Although he later accepted that “we will do everything possible” for Messi to return to Barcelona.
