The Arizona Coyotes beat the Dallas Stars 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday night. As a result, the Canadian will officially end the season in last place in the NHL.
Right-winger Travis Boyd gave the Coyotes the win with 1:43 of overtime. This is his 16th goal of the season.
The Dallas Stars took the lead after 40 minutes, but a three-goal effort in the third period allowed the Coyotes to tie the game at 3-3 and then win 4-3.
In scoring the run, the Stars secured the last available Western Conference berth in the playoffs. They missed the playoffs last season. The Vegas Golden Knights have been removed. They have never missed a playoffs since entering the NHL in 2017-18.
Dallas reached the Stanley Cup Finals in September 2020.
The Coyotes will play their final home game on Friday against the Nashville Predators.
The Coyotes ’overtime win ensures the Montreal Canadiens are late in the league.
The Montreal team will have the best chance (18.7%) of winning the lottery for the next draft, scheduled for May 10th.
