FIFA also unveiled the “WE ARE 26” campaign (“WE ARE 26”, in English) which aspires to “communities playing a vital role” in the upcoming World Cup.

“‘WE ARE 26’ is a rallying cry,” he said. Gianni Infantinopresident of FIFA, who hosted a special event at the iconic Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles attended by football legends such as former Brazilian forward Ronaldo.

The Italian-born Swiss leader added: “This is a moment where three countries and an entire continent are collectively saying ‘we are united to welcome the world and offer the biggest, best and most inclusive World Cup of history'”.

2026 will be the First World Cup to have 48 teams instead of the current 32 and the first time that the biggest football event on the planet has been held in three countries.

The United States will take over most of the tournament and have 11 of 16 total venues for the World Cup: Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and New York /New Jersey.

Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey will be the headquarters in Mexico while, on the Canadian side, Vancouver and Toronto have been the chosen cities.

The logistics news announced by Infantino

Infantino also announced that the teams participating in the 2026 World Cup will be grouped by regions to avoid long journeys in the first stage of the tournament.

The FIFA president argued that the measure taken on the assembly of the group stage is due to the unprecedented size that the tournament will have, due to the number of participants.

The challenge is all the logistics”, which involves organizing in three host countries, Infantino said.

And he added: “It is a continent: three countries and not three small countries, three large countries”. Furthermore, he explained that “distances, schedules, climatic differences also influenced that decision: altitude in Mexico, sea level in other parts”.

In this context, it is essential for FIFA to create an appropriate environment so that teams and fans have the best possible conditions, assured Infantino. Proper context implies “not having to travel too much, especially at the beginning“.

Travel and base arrangements and team mobility at the World Cup were discussed at a meeting in Doha last week, Infantino noted.

In 2026 “there will be some travel involved, but we will coordinate it and make sure it is the best possible conditions for the team,” said Infantino.
