Uruguay opened the Under-20 World Cup in Argentina this Monday with a 4-0 victory over Iraq, in a match played in the Unique Stadium ‘Diego Armando Maradona’ in La Platain which La Celeste dominated from start to finish and which catapulted them to the top of Group E.
Matías Abaldo, Andrés Ferrari, Facundo González and Alan Matturro, the last three in the lead, scored the goals that gave the first three points to those led by Marcelo Broli.
With Fabricio Díaz shooting from midfield, Uruguay dominated the opening minutes of a match in which Franco González, Luciano Rodríguez and Ferrari became a headache for the rival defence.
Iraq turned the game around to the left and opted for the speed and good ball handling of Youssef Amyn, although the clearest shot came from the right thanks to a powerful strike from Ali Jasim.
La Celeste has approached on several occasions, two of these created by Rodríguez and another by Franco González, who pulled the strings of those directed by Broli and was the great figure of the first part.
Indeed, a spectacular play by ‘Cepillo’ turned into the first goal after 38 minutes when the number 10 enabled Matías Abaldo and left goalkeeper Hussein Hasan with no options with a powerful strike.
Nothing changed in the second half and Uruguay didn’t take long to extend their lead.
Barely three minutes had passed when Ferrari took advantage of a great cross from Abaldo and with a powerful header set up the many fans who crossed the Río de la Plata to cheer on Celeste.
And by the same formula, Uruguay turned victory into a landslide victory after 61 minutes of racing.
Díaz finished a corner kick in the center of the box and centre-back Facundo González jumped highest of all to make it 3-0 with a powerful header.
La Celeste doesn’t take her foot off the accelerator and goes close to scoring the fourth goal on several occasions. Iraq came close to being discounted with a powerful shot from Ali Sadeq which was well answered by goalkeeper Randall Rodríguez.
In added time, a header from Matturro after another great corner from Díaz became the fourth goal.
Uruguay batted and added their first three points, the same as England accumulate after beating Tunisia by a minimum.
Next Thursday, still in the city of La Plata, La Celeste and the English will face each other.
