Fran Cerúndolo, ranked 28th in the ATP world rankings, defeated Norrie (14), second favorite and reigning champion in Lyon with overwhelming tennis in one hour and 12 minutes.
The Argentine had already beaten the British in the second round of the Montecarlo Masters 1000 this year and had lost in the 2022 edition of Lyon, this time in the round of 16.
Cerúndolo, 24, chasing the title against young Frenchman Arthur Fils reached the first final of his career by defeating American Brandon Nakashima in three sets, 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 (5).
Cerúndolo will play the third final of his career after winning the title last year at the Swedish ATP in Bastad and losing the definition of the Argentina Open in 2021 against his compatriot Diego Schwartzman.
“Great level today!! Very happy with the transition to the final!! Let’s go tomorrow!!”, posted “Fran” on his Twitter social network account, shortly after his victory.
The ATP 250 in Lyon is played on a surface of brick dust, will distribute prizes for 630,705 euros and is the prelude to Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year which will be played in Paris from next Sunday with the confirmed presence of 10 Argentines, one of them Cerúndolo.
