The National Hockey League Players Association (AJLNH) announced on Friday night that it has decided to start looking for a new director. Donald Fehr has been a union leader since 2010.
An executive committee conference call of the Players’ Association on the matter was held Monday night and the vote ended Friday at 8:15 pm
AJLNH formed a committee whose mandate was to find Donald Fehr’s successor. The committee will consist of seven players: Ian Cole (Carolina Hurricanes), Justin Faulk (Saint Louis Blues), Sam Gagner (Detroit Red Wings), Zach Hyman (Edmonton Oilers), Kyle Okposo (Buffalo Sabers), Nate Schmidt (Winnipeg Jets) ) and Kevin Shattenkirk (Anaheim Duck).
An attorney by practice, Fehr led the Major League Baseball Players Association from 1985 to 2009 before joining the NHL. He will guide players through two collective bargaining negotiations, which were successful in 2013 and 2020.
Fehr will remain the union leader while the search for his successor is made.
The 73-year-old American was recently criticized for his role in the Kyle Beach case in 2010, which was revealed last year. An investigation commissioned by the Players Association, made public two weeks ago, however, found him not at fault when Fehr and other union leaders failed to follow up on a report that a player of the Chicago Blackhawks, who became Kyle Beach, was sexually assaulted by a team member in 2010.
