Bianca Andreescu advanced to the third round of the Madrid tournament with a win over American Danielle Collins on Sunday.
The Ontarian, who is participating in the second tournament after several months of absence, fell to sixth seed in two sets of 6-1, 6-1.
Andreescu just needed 69 minutes to reach the round of 16, where he will face Jessica Pegula, also from the United States. Pegula, who ranks 14th in the world, defeated Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday.
Since accepting the second set with American Alison Riske in the first round, Andreescu, 111th in the world, has won 18 of the next 20 games.
I knew I had to put in a very good performance because (Collins) had some success recently. I didn’t expect it to be like this really. But I stick to my game plan and it will workstudied Andreescu, in comments posted on the WTA website.
End of the road for Leylah Annie Fernandez
In addition, Quebecer Leylah Annie Fernandez, 20th in the world, competed against Jil Teichmann of Switzerland, 35th in the WTA rankings.
He won the game in two sets of 6-4 and 6-4.
That was the second game between the two lefties. Teichmann overtook Fernandez in their previous FedCup (now Billie-Jean King Cup) duel in 2020.
Fernandez doesn’t want to use the pretext of his extraordinary rivalries against other leftists like him.
All battles are complicated. Unfortunately today I didn’t play much. I can’t adapt. I just had too many unforced errors. Jil played well. He was patient and did not make many mistakes. He took advantage of my short ballsFernandez explained after the defeat.
He did not hesitate to name the reasons for his defeat, and acknowledged that he had been slower than usual on the court.
It’s always hard to forget a defeat. We want to always be well and move on to the next round. If not, I will do everything to get back on the field and correct small mistakes. Hopefully execute the game plan next timeFernandez added, who specified that he would watch videos of his fight to learn from it.
When asked if he knows what he needs to improve for his next outing, Fernandez said he can work quickly.
” I want to work as fast as possible. I hope there is some land available a little bit. If not, we’ll be back at work tomorrow for next week and for my doubles match. “
Fernandez won his first game in Madrid against Andrea Petkovic of Germany.
