Mark Cavendish returned to the Giro d’Italia, nine years later

Briton Mark Cavendish will take part in the Tour of Italy, which begins on May 6, nine years after his last appearance. The Quick-Step team announced this on Monday.

The Quick-Step team announced its group composition on Monday, and insisted on the presence of Cavendish, winner of 15 Giro stages between 2008 and 2013.

He also won 34 stages of the Tour de France, a record he holds tied with Eddy Merckx.

Cavendish has three wins this season. He will celebrate his 37th birthday in the race on May 21. The runner from the Isle of Man has Dane Michael Morkov as the opener.

Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, 42, was also present, for his second participation in the event.

Valverde will share responsibilities with the Movistar team with Colombian climber Ivan Sosa, winner of the Tour of Asturias on Sunday.

In his only participation in the Giro, the Spaniard won one stage and finished in third place, in 2016.

The Tour of Italy 2022 will begin on May 6 in Budapest, Hungary, and consist of 21 stages, the last of which will be on May 29 in Verona, a city loved by William Shakespeare and his young lovers Romeo and Juliet.
