San Lorenzo will debut this Saturday in the 2024 Professional League Cup at Lanús, at the start of a season in which it aspires to fight for the title after a period of notable losses due to its institutional problems. The match at the Nuevo Gasómetro will begin at 5pm with referee Fernando Echenique and broadcast by TNT Sports.

With the new president, Marcelo Moretti, the club has regained legitimacy of representation after the premature departure of his predecessor, Marcelo Tinelli, and has started a new sporting project that will continue to be led by a home idol: Rubén Darío Insúa.

“Gallego”, undisputed for the results obtained in adverse institutional conditions, renewed the contract for two years and now has a squad with greater turnover, despite the loss of vital pieces compared to the previous season.

Gone are goalkeeper Augusto Batalla, defenders Rafael Pérez and Gastón Hernández, midfielder Jalil Elías and other elements on whom the coach relied to reach the semi-finals of the 2023 Argentine Cup and qualify for this year’s Copa Libertadores .

San Lorenzo got more than half a dozen reinforcements (Eric Remedi, Iván Tapia, Cristian Ferreira and Cristian Tarragona, the best known), who 24 hours after their debut they were still not sure they could use due to an inhibition FIFA resulted from a salary debt to the club’s former player Yeison Gordillo.

“There are procedures for this to happen (the authorization of reinforcements) and we have until tonight,” confided Insúa, who tested a lineup with three new faces: Colombian defender Jhohan Romaña, Ferreira and Tarragona.

For the debut, the Paraguayan striker Adam Bareiro will not be present from the start, absent from the last training sessions for personal reasons (he recently became a father) and awaiting a possible transfer to the Brazilian from Atletico Paranaense.

Lanús, led by Ricardo Zielinski, will also try to regain their lost prominence, without neglecting the average ranking, in which they find themselves in last place among the teams with an accumulated history in the first division.

The “Granate” (93 points) is only above the newly promoted Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza and Deportivo Riestra, which they will therefore have to add to avoid the risk of relegation as has happened in recent seasons.
