This is the absolute story of Argentine football classics

The match against the historic rival of life is a championship of its own. And in the Argentine championship they are all played on the same date, a particular phenomenon that is not seen anywhere else on the planet. Even if it’s good, and also the history between the greats of Argentine football. Even if there are few pure classics left. For example, of the 14 matches that will be seen on the seventh day of this weekend, only half will be against the usual opponent. These are River-Boca, Independiente-Racing, Huracán-San Lorenzo, Gimnasia-Estudiantes and Newell’s-Rosario Central. Who wins in those intersections. The widest of all

The greatest neighborhood classic in the world, as the San Lorenzo and Huracán fans called themselves, has 188 editions, with 87 victories for the Ciclón (328 goals), 47 for the Huracán (228 goals) and 53 draws. Moreover, a match was abandoned for both.

The other five

Newell’s and Central played 196 matches in the orbit of the AFA and Conmebol, with 63 wins for Canalla (235 goals), 49 defeats (205 goals) and 82 draws. Taking into account the official classics of the Rosario League and the Santa Fe cups, according to the data of my colleague Carlos Durhand, in total they played 276 games, with 94 victories for Central and 77 for Newell’s (+17 difference between the two).

In La Plata there were 186 matches, with 66 victories for Estudiantes (267 goals), 51 for Gimnasia (221 goals) and 69 draws. Most of them played in AFA, but they played two international matches.

Banfield and Lanús have become classics in recent decades. Some still remember the classics until the 1980s with the rise of Los Andes and Banfield on the one hand, and those of Talleres-Lanús on the other.
