Catalan press reports that Daniel Alves was summoned to court to hear his early sentence read after trial

According to information from the Catalan press, the Brazilian football player Daniel Alves was summoned to appear in court next Thursday, 22. The former athlete, who is awaiting his sentence, may receive the outcome of the trial after being accused of sexual assault against a woman in a nightclub in December 2022.

As reported by the Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, which closely followed the trial in a court in Barcelona, Spain, Daniel and his legal team would have been summoned by the judge. In addition to them, the case’s prosecutor and the complainant’s lawyer would also have been ordered to appear before the Spanish court.

The call raises speculation about the possibility of it being related to some clarification regarding the arrest of the athlete, who has already completed a year in prison. The newspaper also reports that the player’s sentence may have already been written by the judge, with the date set for the reading of the verdict on March 7 of this year.

However, it is possible that the result will be brought forward, and the player will be informed about his possible conviction before the date initially scheduled for the sentence to be read. It is important to highlight that, even with early disclosure, the parties involved still have the right to appeal and contest the court’s decision.

To date, Daniel Alves has not yet been declared innocent or guilty and remains in detention – he has been in preventive custody since January 2023. The prediction is that he could face up to 12 years in prison, which is the maximum sentence. His defense asked for acquittal or a sentence with mitigating factors, such as alcohol intoxication, as he had been drinking throughout that day.

What did Daniel Alves say in his testimony at the trial?

At the beginning of the month, Daniel Alves participated in a trial that lasted three days. On the third day, the Brazilian football player spoke for the first time. In the previous days, he remained silent, listening to the testimonies of the witnesses and the analyzes of the experts who investigated the sexual assault accusation case.

In his testimony, he reported his version of what happened: “She was in front of me and we started the relationship. I remember she sat on me. I’m not a violent man. I didn’t force her to perform oral sex forcibly. She did not tell me anything. We were enjoying both of them and nothing else,” he said in court, according to Globo Esporte.

Soon after, he reported that he went home and found his wife, Joana Sanz, in their bed before falling asleep. Daniel cried when sharing this excerpt from his testimony. It is worth noting that this week, the football player’s wife revealed that he wrote a letter to her directly from prison, and published the content of the document on his social networks.
