Bianca Andreescu, 111th in the WTA, passed a big test on Tuesday against the 14th player in the world, American Julia Pegula, in Madrid. The Canadian was eliminated in two sets of 7-5 and 6-1 in 1 h 50 min.
The Canadian’s defense was good in the first set until the 12th game. Pegula finally won after winning 70% of the rallies on his first serve.
The first game of the second set was very tight, and Andreescu showed his determination by breaking his opponent’s serve in his third attempt to take the lead. But the American did not allow himself to be discouraged and matched immediately after the break.
The match was suspended for several minutes due to rain when the American took a 3-1 lead. After the break, the latter split to 4-1.
Andreescu wanted to delay the inevitable, with two break points at 1-5, but Pegula fought well.
The Canadian saved 14 of 17 break points. He showed that he was slowly looking for his bearings.
The two players met once in 2019, in Newport, and the Ontarian won three sets of 0-6, 6-4 and 6-2.
