The Chelsea manager, the Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino, defended himself this Monday from the harsh criticism received from the former English footballer Gary Neville after the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool in the English League Cup final. The former Manchester United defender, in his role as a television commentator, assured that the Santa Fe team retreats when playing “under pressure” and that he should have “attacked” more the team led by Jürgen Klopp, hit by a significant number of injured and was forced to use many youth players.
“I have no sympathy for Chelsea, a bottle work of 1,000 million pounds”, expressed Neville, who had defined the London team a “fiasco”.
The term “bottle work” is used derogatorily in English football for players or teams who are hit when playing “under pressure”.
“If he said that, I think it’s not right to talk like that,” Pochettino responded when asked about Neville’s comments.
“We are a young team and there is nothing to compare to Liverpool just because they ended up with some young players. I think it is impossible to compare them. I have a good relationship with Gary Neville. I respect his opinion but he knows the dynamics of the two teams they are completely different,” added the manager born in Murphy, Santa Fe, 51 years ago after the 1-0 defeat at the end of extra time against Liverpool.
Despite the blow, the Argentine coach was determined to remain in charge: “We remain strong, we must believe in this project and see what we can do in the future. We are a young team”, he concluded.
