A few days ago, Brazilian footballer Dani Alves was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for raping a woman in the bathroom of the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona, in the early hours of December 31, 2022.
Faced with this situation, Barcelona, one of the clubs where he took a step forward and was able to shine alongside the Argentine star Lionel Messi, made the clear decision to withdraw the status of legendary footballer from the 40-year-old Brazilian of the club.
The experienced right back played 408 games and won three Champions Leagues, three European Super Cups, three Club World Cups, four editions of the Copa del Rey, four Spanish Super Cups and six Scudetti in eight years with the Blaugrana shirt, in two different cycles.
Dani Alves was part of the selected list consisting of 102 historic players who have achieved this milestone in the institution’s 125-year history. But Barcelona didn’t hesitate for a second and deleted the image of Dani Alves that appeared on its official website, in the historic players section.
Added to this is the drastic measure taken by the authorities of Bahia – the club where Alves trained and won three titles during his stay – which included the removal of his image from the museum located in the Fonte Nova Arena, in Salvador.
As if that wasn’t enough, some residents of Juazeiro, his hometown, vandalized the statue that the city inaugurated in 2020 with bags and ribbons to recognize his career.
Despite the insistence of the inhabitants of Juazeiro to get rid of the statue, the mayor confirmed that it will be removed “when there is a final ruling”. It should be remembered that the sentence that Dani Alves received is not final and can be challenged by his defense and by the legal team representing the girl who reported him.
