Goaltender Jake Allen was selected on Wednesday to represent the Montreal Canadiens for the King-Clancy trophy.
This trophy is awarded annually to the player who has shown the best example of leadership and has made the greatest contribution to society.
Each of the 32 NHL organizations must select one of its players for the trophy.
The winner will receive a grant of US $ 25,000 which he / she will donate to the organization of his / her choice, and the other two finalists will also have to do so with their respective $ 5,000 grants.
A committee selecting league executives, including commissioner Garry Bettman and assistant commissioner Bill Daly, will be tasked with selecting the winner.
Other contenders for the King Clancy Trophy include New Jersey Devils defenseman PK Subban and Vegas Golden Knights forward Max Pacioretty.
Former Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne was honored last year.
