He Boca Juniors stadium would be headed towards a great transformation, still without a definitive name but with an ambitious plan which – according to journalist Pablo Ladaga on his YouTube channel – seems to have been supported by Juan Roman Riquelme, the president of the club. The club has been working on this plan since 2020 and it could be made official in the next few days.

The main idea is to widen the Bombonera towards the car park (they would gain 8 metres), adding two levels above the stages, closing the curves and covering the stadium. With these changes the maximum capacity would increase to 91,452 spectatorssurpassing the almost 85,000 seats of River Plate’s Monumental stadium.

According to Ladaga, Riquelme has already approved the project. Currently the Alberto J. Armando stadium has more than 59,000 seats, but with the elimination of some seats and the changes made during the management of Jorge Amor Ameal, current vice president of Román, more than 30,000 new places with the renovation.

The plan envisages a significant expansion of all seats: from 30,704 seats in the populace to 50,000, from 20,766 seats to 34,200, and the boxes would go from 2,166 to 7,252. Three possible sources of funding for the project were mentioned: a major sponsor, the sale of new pits and club funds.

“The architecture firm is absolutely convinced that this is achievable”– added Ladaga. If built during Riquelme’s presidency, Boca’s stadium would be the largest in South America, surpassing River’s. However, before starting construction, a feasibility phase will be carried out to evaluate the technical and structural feasibility of the project.

Although there is no official comment on this plan, Riquelme has expressed interest in increasing the capacity of the stadium while maintaining harmony with the neighbors. “The first thing to do is to do it on the same land we have, see if more people come in without disturbing anyone and invite all the neighbors to come to the field and continue to live next to the Bombonera. “It’s the first thing we’ll do, it’s being studied”Romano had said.

It should be noted that this project does not involve the purchase of the two nearby blocks nor of the houses facing the street in via Del Valle Iberlucea.
