Head coach Mike Sullivan said DeSmith was under the knife Friday morning and he didn’t get past the rest of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The operation came three days after DeSmith left the playing surface in the second period of overtime in Game 1 of the series between the Penguins and New York Rangers.

DeSmith started the playoffs as No. 1 goalie, as star goaltender Tristan Jarry is still on the sideline with a lower-body injury.

DeSmith’s injury means Quebec’s Louis Domingue will be the Penguins ’starter for Game 3 of its best-of-seven series on Saturday.

Sullivan did not rule out the possibility of Jarry returning to the series. Jarry has not played since suffering a foot injury on April 15.

Alex D’Orio will be the backup goaltender for the Penguins, who are trying to advance to the first round of the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
