After scoring 14 goals in the last two games, the Oilers failed to score in Game 4 of the series against the Kings and lost 4-0 on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Jonathan Quick made 31 saves for the shutout, 48 hours after making way for Cal Petersen in Game 3 of the series.
Mike Smith on his part drove 42 of 45 shots aimed at him.
The Kings scored eight minutes into the first period when defenseman Evan Bouchard could not control the puck in front of Mike Smith’s net. Phillip Danault took it and gave it to Trevor Moore to score his second in the playoffs.
Six minutes later, Troy Stecher, in his first game of the series, shot into the Oilers ’net, the puck hitting defenseman Duncan Keith’s stick before Smith’s pads broke.
The Oilers had three power plays, two in the second period and one early in the third period.
At first, they shot Jonathan Quick twice, but the Kings had a better chance of scoring. Phillip Danault took the puck from Tyson Barrie in Kings territory, then crossed the ice to stand alone in front of Mike Smith who saved.
In the second power play, the Oilers didn’t hit the Kings ’net. They had two shots in the third, still unsuccessful.
With less than five minutes left in the third, Carl Grundstrom put the game out of the Oilers ’reach. Coach Jay Woodcroft requested a video replay, which allegedly blocked Mike Smith, but officials did not change the decision.
Grundstrom scored another goal, this one on an empty net.
Six Misconduct
Anger erupted when six penalties for misconduct were awarded in the dying minutes of the game.
First were Evander Kane and Alexander Edler following Grundstrom’s opening goal. Darnell Nurse and Trevor Moore followed, then Cody Ceci and Blake Lizotte went to their colleagues in the locker room seconds later.
