Barry Trotz was removed by the Islanders

The New York Islanders have fired head coach Barry Trotz, president and general manager Lou Lamoriello announced Monday.

He went 37-35-10 last season and the team was knocked out of the playoffs after finishing 9th in the East.

Trotz, who will celebrate his 60th birthday in July, has just finished his fourth season with the Islanders. He compiled a 152-102-34 record during his time on Long Island and this is the first time he hasn’t made it into the playoffs.

He has one more year left on the five -year contract he signed when he left the Capitals after winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.

During his NHL career, he posted a 914-670-60-168 record as head coach of the Nashville Predators (1998-2014), Washington Capitals (2014-2018) and Islanders.

Trotz also won the Jack Adams Trophy, awarded to head coach par excellence, twice, in 2016 and 2019.
