Forward Patrick Marleau announced his retirement on Tuesday. He thus ended a career in which he set a record with 1,779 games played in 23 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL).
The 42-year-old veteran, who hails from Aneroid, Sask., Confirmed the information in an article published in The Player’s Tribune.
Marleau has not played in the NHL since the 2020-21 season, when he had four goals and five assists in 56 games with the San Jose Sharks. He also took the opportunity to surpass the mark of 1,767 games played in the NHL, which until then had been owned by legendary Gordie Howe.
Marleau had a total of 1,197 points (566 goals, 631 assists) on the Bettman circuit, mostly with the Sharks. He also spent two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and appeared in eight games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He added 127 points (72 goals, 55 assists) to his record in 195 playoff games.
Patrick Marleau, who was selected second overall by the Sharks in the 1997 NHL Draft, will hang up his skates because he knows he is the all -time leader of the California organization in goals, points, home goal numerical (161), shorthanded goals (17) and game-winning goals (101).
However, he has not been able to lift the Stanley Cup in his long career. He allowed the Sharks to reach the final series in 2016, but they lost six games to the Penguins.
On the international scene, Marleau also contributed to Canada’s Olympic gold medal wins in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014, at the 2004 World Cup and at the 2003 World Championships.
