Frenchman Arnaud Démare won the sprint on Wednesday in Messina, the 5th stage of the Tour of Italy.
Démare (Groupama-FDJ) defeated Colombian Fernando Gaviria and Italian Giacomo Nizzolo at the end of this transition period, for the second Sicilian day of the event.
Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek) remains the leader of the Giro after its 174 km stage with a climb in the first half of the course.
Few sprinters were left on this climb. If Démare is picked up at the bottom of the descent, 75 km from the finish, Australian Caleb Ewan and Briton Mark Cavendish will not be able to return to the main peloton.
Canadian Alexander Cataford finished in 148th, 2:54 behind the winner. He slipped to 60th place overall (+15: 15).
Démare, 30, won his sixth round of the Giro after one victory in 2019 and four in 2020 (in addition to the jersey scoring points).
The climb was difficult. I lost a lot of time, but the guys (on the team) did a great job at coming downDemare explained.
Then we quickly regained the lead to keep the space. In cycling, sometimes it’s hard to put things in place, but you have to know how to persevereHe added.
Arnaud Démare finished 2nd behind Mark Cavendish in the 3rd period of the Giro on Sunday. He takes the points classification jersey.
On Thursday, the race will move to the mainland and the 192 km stage will take riders to Calabria between Palmi and Scalea, on a flat road after the first 50 km and in favor of sprinters.
