Rebecca Marino of Canada defeated Paula Ormeachea 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday at the French Open.
The ninth seed beat Argentina after 1 hour 26 minutes on clay in Paris.
The 31-year-old British Columbian used his power to overcome the 148th racket in the world. Notably he made 7 aces and won 77% of the points on his first service ball. Marino also took advantage of 4 of the 11 break points on offer, and he broke 2 times in 4 attempts.
Marino, the 116th player in the WTA, will face Ukrainian Katarina Zavatska (210th) in the next round. The 22-year-old has yet to get past the first round of the main draw in his first two appearances in 2020 and 2021.
For his part, the maple leaf representative is trying to enter the main draw at Roland-Garros for the fourth time, and the first in eight years. He then had his best result in singles in Paris, reaching the third round of the competition.
The winner of the duel between Marino and Zavatska will have a date with the winner of the duel between Australian Seone Mendez (no 223) and American Caroline Dolehide (no 173) in the final qualifying round.
The French Open will be officially held on Sunday.
