Eritrean Biniam Girmay won the 10th stage of the Giro on Tuesday in Jesi (middle-east), the first victory of a rider from his country on a grand tour.
Girmay, of the Belgian team Intermarché, ran ahead of Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel, who gave a thumbs up as he crossed the line to salute the young African’s performance.
At the age of 22, Girmay was involved with Giro for the first time in his career.
Cycling at its best.

Professional since 2020, he has eight successes to his name, including three for the current year alone. By the end of March, he had become the first African to win a classic (Ghent-Wevelgem).
In the overall classification, Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek) retains the leader’s pink jersey that was picked up last Tuesday at Etna.
Italian Alessandro de Marchi, who escaped with two colleagues (Davide Bais and Lawrence Naesen), led up to the final 20 kilometers.
Australian Caleb Ewan, whose team worked to limit the breakaway lead, and Briton Mark Cavendish were left before last hour.
Alexander Cataford (Israel-Premier Tech), the only Canadian to be registered, crossed the finish line just two minutes after the win, in 80th place.
Wednesday, the 11th stage shows a strictly flat profile from Santarcangelo di Romagna to Reggio Emilia, on an often straight path of 203 kilometers.
