World No. did not return. 2 Daniil Medvedev on the tennis courts after a six-week absence due to injury on Tuesday, lost 2-6, 6-7 (5/7) to Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the second round of the Geneva tournament.
Operated for a hernia last month, Medvedev warned on Sunday that he often takes a long time to start with clay. This happened in his first game of the season over this, in the last tournament before the French Open.
Against Gasquet’s first match point, Medvedev made his seventh double fault in the encounter.
Unlike Medvedev, Gasquet has already won tournaments on clay, and the 35-year-old veteran defeated the favorite tournament in the first set where he looked in full control.
Medvedev committed three double faults that helped Gasquet break in the opening game of the second set. In the next game, the Russian smashed one of his rackets to the ground.
Medvedev salvaged the service break in the sixth game to make it 3-3.
In the second-set tiebreak, Medvedev was able to erase two downs after giving up a mini-break, but his serve ended up neglecting him once.
