South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster quietly endorsed the law by signing an executive order banning transgender boys-turned-girls from playing sports on public and higher educational institutions on women’s teams in the US state.
The law is one of 43 executive orders signed into law by Governor Henry McMaster on Monday.
He did not use his social networks to confirm the information, contrary to what he did after giving his approval to enhanced parental leave or early voting in elections.
Shortly before the South Carolina Senate passed the bill earlier this month, Henry McMaster expressed his views:
I believe women should play with women and men with men, she says. It’s always like that.
When asked if he was talking about men at birth, the governor replied: is there another class?
The law states that transgender youth must compete in sports based on the gender identity shown on their birth certificate.
I think, despite the strong reactions generated by this bill, it is not anti-trans athlete in my opinion. and Republican Senator Penry Gustafson.
The purpose of this bill should be to recognize the importance of protecting biological opportunities for women in women’s sports, she said. I’m sorry, but no one will convince me that a trans athlete on a women’s sports team has no significant and unfair physical advantage over her teammates and rival female athletes.
South Carolina joins other conservative states that require transgender students to respect the gender identity listed on their birth certificate in order to enroll on sports teams. The governors of Oklahoma and Arizona signed their laws in late March.
It will be recalled that in 2016, the enactment of a discrimination law against transgender people in North Carolina provoked intense criticism. In response to an ordinance from the city of Charlotte, allowing trans people to go to the bathroom of their choice, the state decided that only gender identity at birth was important.
The NBA removed the organization of the February 2017 All-Star Game from the city of Charlotte, the artists canceled the concerts, along with Bruce Springsteen and Ringo Starr, the financial institution Deutsche Bank blocked the acquisition in this state. Cirque du Soleil has canceled three shows scheduled in this state in the southeastern United States.
