Hockey fans performed at an offensive celebration Wednesday night at the Saddledome in Calgary. The Calgary Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers 9-6 in Alberta’s first playoff battle since 1991.
The Oilers struggled to start the meeting throughout the season. In 82 games, the team allowed the first goal of the game 49 times. Only three teams in the NHL have given a 1-0 lead to their opponents more often than the Oilers.
We can say the team had the worst start to the game in a very long time when after six minutes and five seconds of play, it was 3-0 for the Flames.
Elias Lindholm, 26 seconds into the game, and Andrew Mangiapane, 25 seconds later, scored the first two goals for the hosts, forcing coach Jay Woodcroft to request a timeout.
Brett Ritchie scored the Flames ’third goal and sent Mike Smith out of the game.
That’s why Mikko Koskinen became the 29th goaltender used by a team since the playoffs began.
Connor McDavid revived the Oilers with his fifth goal in the playoffs. The first period ended 3-1 in favor of Calgary.
Seven goals in the second
The Flames started the second period the same way, scoring again from the first moments. Blake Coleman put his name on the scoresheet after 45 seconds of play.
The former Lightning hit the target again shortly after, the game seemed out of reach of the Oilers, but they did not give up.
Evan Bouchard received an accurate pass from Connor McDavid then beat Jacob Markstrom with a shot over the top of the net. In the game, Zack Kassian received a rough penalty, the Flames took the opportunity to add another goal, that of Matthew Tkachuk.
Far from it, the Oilers scored three times before the end of the engagement, Zach Hyman twice and Leon Draisaitl cut the hosts ’advantage to just one goal, it was 6-5 after 40 minutes.
Third Mark
The Oilers quickly got to the scoreboard in the third period. Kailer Yamamoto pushed the puck past Markstrom to tie the game. The Flames responded with three goals, the second and third by Rasmus Anderson and Matthew Tkachuk in the game.
seven to eight
Johnny Gaudreau has scored at least one point in the seventh game since the start of the playoffs. He was shut out of the scoresheet only in Game 2 of the series against the Dallas Stars.
For his part, Connor McDavid had his seventh game with at least two points in the playoffs.
31 year wait
The first game between the two teams was the first in the playoffs since April 16, 1991. The Oilers won the first round game thanks to an overtime goal by Esa Tikkanen.
Edmonton eliminated the Los Angeles Kings in six games, before losing to the Minnesota North Stars in five games.
