A 90-year-old man died in Belgrano’s Buenos Aires neighborhood hours after being the victim of a robbery using the “uncle’s story”, in which two thieves deleted his bank accounts and took 130 million pesos (about 650,000 dollars).
According to the victim’s family, “he died of grief” when he realized the scam.
The old man’s name is Ernesto and he lives alone in an apartment. He received a phone call from someone pretending to be his brother and told him he would send a remis to his house to take him to the bank to empty the safe deposit boxes. To end the robbery, the thieves went around for more than half an hour to pretend they were working on paperwork, they left the man in a corner of Caballito and they promised to return in half an hour with the new bills, those with big faces. They left him without his cellphone. No one else heard of them.
An hour later, the abandoned man contacted his sister to let her know that no one was speaking.past There he realized that became the victim of a scam.

“That day we complained to the police station. When we finished, I took him home, the woman who was taking care of him was coming. In the afternoon, the police will ask more questions. They went upstairs, and as they were leaving, he told the woman to go with them downstairs. He got down and when he came back he started knocking on the door. He did not answer. He called us, we went out there, we opened the door and we saw him sitting, no life, in the armchair of the house. I was doing CPR for 15 minutes ”, Andrés added about the tragic end.
Band that specializes in “uncle tales”
This week, Buenos Aires City Police arrested a gang known as “The Simulators”, specializes in “uncle’s story” type blows, where they would have stolen about 250 thousand dollars and 800 thousand pesos.
As reconstructed in the investigation, the gang committed at least eight scams using various tricks known as “lottery ticket winner”, “lost aliens” and “money bag”although it is believed that they will actually participate in a total of thirteen events with the same characteristics.
