The Roland-Garros tournament never really smiled at Denis Shapovalov. The trend continues in 2022.

Faced with Danish prodigy Holger Rune in the first round, the long-time left-hander had only a simple role in addition to small court number 12, jostled 6-3, 6-1 and 7-6 ( 7- 4) of the 19-year-old player, 40th in the ATP rankings.

More consistent and more accurate, Dane easily wins from behind the field against a rival struggling to find his ocher marks. Shapovalov’s performance comes just a few years since losing to Rafael Nadal in Rome in early May.

However, in the first set, Shapovalov had his first chance to lead his rival, but he broke a break point to 2-1.

From the next game, Dane didn’t miss his chance and took advantage of his rival’s mischievous game to steal his serve. After disagreeing with the referee on a linesman’s call, Shapovalov seems to have lost his once trembling concentration.

Rune broke the left serve again to close the set at 6-3, a set in which Shapovalov hit eight wins in the game but mostly made 16 unforced errors.

The second set was more than the advantage of Dane who won 6-1 in just 20 minutes.

Again, the hit-to-unforce ratio hurt Shapovalov with a 5-to-16 total.

Shapovalov showed a bit of pride late in the third set. After giving up his serve to zero, the southpaw saved a match point before breaking his rival for the first time in the game to tie the game at 5-5.

However, in the tiebreaker, Shapovalov again lacked accuracy, especially on the forehand, and lost 7-4. In total, Ontario will end its working day with 53 unforced errors against just 27 winning shots, a portion that is clearly not enough to expect to win.

As soon as the fight was over, rain began to pour down on the tournament area. The break could have been beneficial to Shapovalov, but the Canadian was unable to extend the game beyond a minimum of three innings.

In four appearances at Roland-Garros, Shapovalov, 15th in the world, has only crossed twice in the first round and has yet to reach the third.

Holger Rune, he seems to appreciate the Parisian tournament, which he also won as a junior in 2019.
