The Premier League on Tuesday approved plans to sell Chelsea to a consortium led by co-Los Angeles Dodgers owner Todd Boehly.

The UK government still needs to approve the deal before it can proceed.

The Premier League added that the purchase remains subject to the government granting the required license to sell and satisfactory completion of the final stages of the transaction.

Todd Boehly has agreed to buy the club for 2.5 billion pounds, or 4.2 billion Canadian dollars, the highest price ever for a professional sports team.

Roman Abramovich’s tenure of ownership is about to end after 19 years.

The agreement was delayed because the British government wanted to make sure Roman Abramovich, who was authorized for his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin, did not profit from the forced sale of the team.

Chelsea has been operating under a government license (which will expire on May 31) since Roman Abramovich’s assets were frozen in March.
