Since then, all attention has been refocused on his unified title defense (WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF) against Golovkin, who never fought at 168 lbs.

Their two previous fights at middleweight (160 lbs) included a controversial draw on Sept. 16, 2017, and a majority decision in favor of Alvarez on Sept. 15, 2018, each time at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. .

This decision by Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) to favor Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) for his next duel was to pull the rug from under the feet of American David Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs).

He expects to be selected following his resounding victory over David Lemieux on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.

For the record, Lemieux and Golovkin established, on October 17, 2015, the attendance record that still stands for a boxing match shown at Madison Square Garden in New York.
