Canada ended the French team tournament at the World Hockey Championship with a clear 7-1 victory on Tuesday in Helsinki.
Canada left with five straight goals, scored by Dylan Cozens, Maxime Comtois, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Eric O’Dell and Zach Whitecloud, before France entered the scoreboard in the third period.
The match, which took place in front of 2,873 spectators, did not have much stake for the two teams as the result had no effect on their place in the standings, i.e. 3rd for Canada and 6th for France.
Anthony Rech scored the only goal for the losing side. Dubois scored twice and Damon Severson completed the scoring.
Canadian goaltender Chris Driedger made 18 saves on 19 shots, while his French counterpart Sebastian Ylönen saved 37 of the 44 pucks sent into his net.
So here we are, said Captain Thomas Chabot. We’re all tired, because it’s been a long NHL season, but when we get to the World Championship playoffs, it gives us energy.
It’s a chance to visit other cities, it’s always nice to compete in the World Championshiphe concludes.
Defending champions, the Canadians finished the preliminary round behind the Germans, 2nd, and the Swiss, 1st.
Maple leaf representatives will advance to the elimination stage and will play in the quarter-finals against the Swedes on Thursday.
